Birmingham Passenger Station
Title:  Birmingham Passenger Station
Description:  Built in 1889 to replace the Relay House. It was THE station in Birmingham until 1906 when the Birmingham Terminal Station was built. Birmingham Passenger Station continued to be used by the L&N and possibly the AB&A/AB&C until replaced in the 1960s. Originally a ground level station, the tracks were elevated in the early 1930s. It was located on the corner of 20th St. and Morris Ave.

Modern L&N Station
Title:  Modern L&N Station
Description:  Built to replace the Birmingham Passenger Station (and to free up land for a new high rise office building) this station was actually built on the same parcel of land that the Relay House was located. Although built late in the railroad passenger era, it contained segregated waiting rooms, restrooms and lunch counters.

Amtrak Station
Title:  Amtrak Station
Description:  In 1974, Amtrak was kicked out of the L&N station by the railroad. They had plans to sell the station and land to a developer so Morris Towers could be built. It never happened and Amtrak has spent the next 40 years in the under track area which was behind the 1960s building sandwiched between that building and and Sugar trucking company. (I know this is a small picture, Ill post a larger one when I can find it)

Honey Bees
Title:  Honey Bees
Description:  As a part of building the new station, the construction company needed to remove the brick veneer that was placed by a Law firm in 1979, over the retaining wall on each side of the old station ticket office. When they put the brick up, it covered up the windows in womens lounges on each side. Over the years of sugar transloading ajacent to the station, Honey Bees started visiting. And, it seems they built a nest in the window void behind the brick. Well, Friday, the wall started coming down and here is the bee hive that was found. I dont know how many millions of bees there are in this picture. The hive and bees were removed by a bee keeper the next morning. And, no! we didnt get any of the honey!

Title:  Station view changing soon
Description:  The parking garage across the street from the station is on the National Register of Historic buildings, or so I have been told. It si the first of its type. Over the years it has aged poorly on the outside. While used continuously and currently the parking deck for Condos, the ouside has been allowed to deteriorate. Most people think it is a falling down abandoned building. Finally, something is going to be done. Here is a redition of what it will look like when you exit the new station!

On the corner will be the entrance to the Birmingham Jefferson County Transit Authoritys central office on the second floor. Also there will be a Police substation. Pictures from the other end (19th St) dont show much yet. By the first of the year, I should be able to get a picture that will show more of what to expect when finished.
